What to see and do in Villarroya de la Sierra

Villarroya de la Sierra
Village
Villarroya de la Sierra is a municipality of the Community of Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, with 397 inhabitants, situated at 732 metres of altitude between the Sierra de la Virgen and the valley of the Ribota gully. Its name, meaning the reddish or ruddy town, alludes to the dominant colour of the land. In Roman times a pottery workshop for making terra sigillata operated beside the ravine, active from the year 50 until the 4th century, with its peak in the 2nd and 3rd centuries; beside it a Roman burial area has been found. Although it does not appear in late medieval censuses with a Moorish population, the village has a clear Muslim past, visible in its network of irrigation channels. It preserves the Mudéjar church of San Pedro Apóstol, from the 15th century, of which only the Gothic doorway was saved after a fire.
