What to see and do in Aniñón

Aniñón
Village
Aniñón is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in Zaragoza, 93 km from the provincial capital, between 650 and 1,428 m in altitude in the sierra de la Virgen and the valley of the rambla de Ribota, with 678 inhabitants. Nearby is a Celtiberian settlement, the Cerro de los Moros, inhabited between the 7th century BC and the 1st century AD. According to tradition, Aniñón allied with Torralba in the year 912 against the Arab king of Zaragoza, Marsillo, in a battle near the sierra de Armantes. A document from 1262 records a visit by James I, who granted it rights over crown lands, and in 1357, during the war with Castile, Peter IV ordered the population evacuated. Its church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, Gothic-Mudéjar in style from the 14th century, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1981.
