What to see and do in Sestrica

Sestrica
Village
Sestrica is a municipality in the Aranda comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, with 329 inhabitants, which also includes the settlement of Viver de la Sierra; it lies at the foot of the Sierra de Vicort, which separates the Aranda valley from that of Calatayud. It preserves the Torre de los Urrea, also called the Tower or Castle of Sestrica, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), and the church of San Miguel, from the 17th century, as well as the windmill known as El Palomar, one of the few examples of this type of building in Aragón, similar to the windmills of La Mancha, today without machinery and used as a woodshed. The village keeps the tradition of migas de pastor, made with stale bread sautéed with garlic, oil and bacon, and served with sausage, grapes or chocolate.
Church of Sestrica
Monument
The church of San Miguel de Sestrica, from the 17th century, was listed in Madoz's 19th-century description as a parish of ascenso rank, whose priest was appointed by the Count of Aranda and who had a coadjutor. Although the temple is under the dedication of San Miguel, the village's patron is San Bartolomé.
Mountain range of Vicort
Nature
A mountain range that separates the Aranda valley from that of Calatayud (Zaragoza), belonging to the Aragonese branch of the Sistema Ibérico, with an alignment of more than 25 kilometres between El Frasno and Codos. Its highest point is the Pico del Rayo, at 1,427 metres of altitude. It is covered by holm oaks and pines together with Mediterranean scrubland of heather, gorse, thyme and pastureland, and holds important forest masses that shelter wild boar and roe deer, the object of hunting drives. Cherry, almond and olive trees are grown on its slopes, and in autumn it is a mushroom-gathering area.
Festivities of Sestrica
Activity

Festivities of invierno de Sestrica
Activity
Sestrica's winter festival is held at the foot of the sierra de Vicort, which separates the valley of the Aranda from that of Calatayud, in a village where shepherd's migas with longaniza, grapes or chocolate remain a dish for group meals.

Mountain range of Vicort (vertiente Aranda)
Nature
The Sierra de Vicort, part of the Aragonese branch of the Iberian System, extends for more than 25 kilometres between El Frasno and Codos; on its Aranda slope it separates the valley of the same name from that of Calatayud, with important forest masses over the municipality of Sestrica. Its highest point is the Pico del Rayo, at 1427 metres, and its slopes combine holm oaks and pines with Mediterranean scrub, gorse heathland and thyme scrub with seasonal pastures, habitat of wild boar and roe deer, game species of the area.
Migas of the Aranda valley
Food and drink
The shepherds' migas, made with stale bread moistened and fried with garlic, oil and bacon fat, are served accompanied by longaniza, grapes or chocolate. They were the breakfast of the valley's day laborers and today are prepared at group meals and pilgrimage festivals.
