What to see and do in Gotor

Gotor
Village
A municipality in the comarca of Aranda, in the province of Zaragoza, situated at 608 metres above sea level at the foot of the sierra de la Virgen, in the valley of the río Aranda, a tributary of the Jalón. It preserves on the Cerro del Calvario the Celtiberian settlement of El Calvario, devoted to iron metallurgy from the mid-5th century BC, which suffered three violent destructions and was finally razed around 74 BC during the Sertorian Wars. The present-day town stands on a Roman settlement, later occupied by Visigoths and Muslims, from whom the old quarter of adobe houses is preserved. Jaime I granted the barony in 1250 to the Martínez de Luna lineage, which built in the 16th century the Dominican convent of la Consolación, with its family pantheon. It has 309 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
