What to see and do in Zuera

Zuera
Village
Zuera is a municipality in the Comarca Central of Aragón, in the province of Zaragoza, with 8,766 inhabitants, situated beside the río Gállego at 279 metres above sea level, between the Ebro depression and the outer pre-Pyrenean ranges. Its name comes from the Arabic Suxayra, a diminutive of Saxra (rock), that is, "little rock". In antiquity the region was part of the territory of the Ilergetes, and near the present-day town centre stood the ancient Gallicum, mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary. The town was reconquered just before the capture of Zaragoza in 1118 and repopulated with Gascon knights, who introduced the cult of San Licer, and in 1366 Pedro IV the Ceremonious sold the town and its hamlets to the council of Zaragoza for 170,000 sueldos jaqueses.
Church of Zuera
Monument
Church of San Pedro, with an original 14th-century fabric of proto-Mudéjar character: given its date it cannot strictly be considered Mudéjar, but it represents the link between Romanesque and Aragonese Mudéjar, and Zuera is a key reference for explaining the origin of that style.
Festivities of Zuera
Activity
Zuera celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of San Licer, a feast documented since the early 16th century, from 25 to 30 August, with cabezudos (big-heads), street parades, gegants (giants), a procession and a baturra mass on the 26th.
Gallicum, way station on the road to Béarn
Historical milestone
In Roman times the Antonine Itinerary places the mansio of Gallicum in the vicinity of Zuera, a stop on the road linking Caesaraugusta with the Pyrenees and Béarn. The ford across the Gállego explains the continuity of settlement at this point on the route.
Sale of Zuera to the council of Zaragoza
Historical milestone
Burdened by the expenses of the war with Castile, Pedro IV sold the villa of Zuera in 1366 to the council of Zaragoza. The villa had been reconquered around 1118 and repopulated with Gascon knights, who introduced the cult of San Licer.
Mushrooms of the Zuera pine forests
Food and drink
The pine forest of Zuera, the largest mass of Aleppo pine in the surroundings of Zaragoza, gives in autumn saffron milk caps and king trumpet mushrooms that are gathered for domestic consumption and for the restaurants of the comarca. They are prepared grilled or stewed with meat.
