What to see and do in Perdiguera

Perdiguera
Village
Perdiguera is a municipality in the comarca of Los Monegros, at 474 m above sea level and about 25 km from Zaragoza, whose name alludes to the abundance of partridges on its land, from the Aragonese suffix -era. Documented as a district of Zaragoza in the 1495 hearth census (fogaje), in 1588 a commissioner of the Jurados of Zaragoza organised its defence: he counted 64 men fit to bear arms and ordered the village walled, leaving only four access gates. Set at the foot of the Sierra de Alcubierre, its municipal area reaches Monte Oscuro, at 824 m the second-highest peak of the sierra. It preserves the church of the Assumption, from the 15th-16th centuries with a Mudéjar tower, and the hermitage of Santa Engracia, already mentioned in 1168 in Cistercian sources.
Church of Perdiguera
Monument
Church of la Asunción, whose original building was erected in 1496 by master builder Alonso Lesmes, with a single nave and a polygonal apse; side chapels, a high gallery and the tower were added in the 16th century. It combines a pointed Gothic 15th-century portal with 16th-century Mudejar brick decoration (friezes and diamond motifs); the tower, in the late Mudejar tradition, received an octagonal top in the 20th century.
