What to see and do in Villanueva de Gállego

Villanueva de Gállego
Village
Villanueva de Gállego is an Aragonese municipality at 244 metres above sea level, beside the río Gállego, in the centre of the Ebro depression. Its first known place name, Burjazud, means defensive tower of the weir, and points to a possible early settlement near the present-day Soto de la Virgen; after floods of the river the new village was built, and later the Arabic trace was removed from the name to call it Villanueva de Gállego. Remains of two Roman roads pass through its municipal area, one towards Osca and another towards Pamplona via Castejón de Valdejasa. Founded in 1092, the Cistercian order established the abbey of Juncería there in 1152, until the monks moved to the monastery of Rueda in 1202; Villanueva became independent from Zaragoza on 15 August 1813.
Church of Villanueva de Gállego
Monument
Parish church of el Salvador, whose plot was ceded in 1247 by the councils of Burjazud and Villanova to the Seo of Zaragoza. The present building dates from 1820 and was built on the ruins of the earlier church, destroyed in the War of Independence; it preserves an 18th-century main altarpiece from the workshop of the Mesa family.

The so-called small festivities are held on 15 May in honour of San Isidro Labrador, while the main Festa Major is dedicated to the Santas Reliquias, a silver reliquary brought from Rome in the early 17th century; it was traditionally held on the last Sunday of September, although in recent years it has been moved forward to early August. The local festive calendar also includes Santa Águeda, on 5 February, San Antón, on 17 January, with its traditional bonfires, a living nativity scene at Christmas and the Día del Comercio (Trade Day), on the first Sunday of September.
