What to see and do in Villamayor de Gállego

Villamayor de Gállego
Village
Villamayor de Gállego is a municipality in the Comarca Central, near Zaragoza, at the confluence of the natural comarcas of Bajo Gállego and Monegros, the dryness of the latter contrasting with the lushness of its market gardens, irrigated by the Acequia de Camarera in the floodplain of the río Gállego. Repopulated after the conquest of Zaragoza by Alfonso I in 1118, it was called simply Villamayor until 1916. It was a rural district of Zaragoza between 1912 and 2006, the year it regained its municipal independence following a residents' movement begun in 1991. It preserves the Mudéjar tower of the church of la Asunción, the hermitage of the Virgen del Pueyo, from the 15th century, and the Sabina de Villamayor, a notable tree of Aragón. It has 2,841 inhabitants (2025), at 226 metres above sea level.

The tower of the church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora of Villamayor de Gállego, in the Aragonese Mudéjar tradition, rises in the Plaza del Planillo, behind the town hall, and is declared a bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Nearby is the hermitage of the Virgen del Pueyo, also a sanctuary of Mudéjar origin, dating from the 15th century.
