What to see and do in Leciñena

Leciñena
Village
Leciñena is a municipality in the comarca of Los Monegros, in the province of Zaragoza, at 415 metres above sea level at the foot of the Sierra de Alcubierre. Tradition places in 1283 the apparition of the Virgin to a shepherd on the hill above the village, the origin of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Magallón, one of the most important in the kingdom in the 15th century and remodelled between the 16th and 18th centuries. On 24 January 1809, while Zaragoza was suffering the second Siege, the French army sacked and burned it, causing dozens of deaths among the inhabitants in the so-called Battle of the Llano, which the town commemorates every year. The present parish church was built in the second half of the 16th century, in limestone, under the direction of the master builder Miguel de Altué.
Church of Leciñena
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the parish church of Leciñena, home to one of the oldest traditional dances of the Monegros comarca. It is a 16th-century work in Gothic-Renaissance style, built in finely worked ashlar stone under the direction of the master builder Miguel de Altué. It has a three-nave plan and a polygonal apse, and a brick bell tower raised in three construction phases. Every 15 March, on the occasion of the feast of the Venida de la Virgen, popular dances such as the seguidillas and “el dance” are performed beside it.

Monument
Tradition places in 1283 the apparition of the Virgin to a shepherd on the hill of Leciñena, the origin of the sanctuary of Magallón. The building was sacked and burned by the French troops in 1809 and rebuilt afterwards; it remains the centre of a comarca pilgrimage festival.
