What to see and do in Gurrea de Gállego

Gurrea de Gállego
Village
Gurrea de Gállego is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca comarca, in Aragon, next to the río Gállego and its tributary the Sotón, on which the Romans built the trading centre of Forum Gallorum and a bridge whose ashlar blocks are still preserved. In March 1092 it was the meeting place between Sancho Ramírez and his son Pedro with El Cid Campeador, then an ally of the Moorish king of Zaragoza; after the Christian conquest, in 1134 Alfonso I the Battler granted Gurrea and its castle to Ximén Pérez de Murillo, the origin of the barony of Gurrea, which passed in 1366 to the Lope de Gurrea family. It also gives its name to the Ribera del Gállego-Cinco Villas wine geographical indication, recognised in 2006, which protects vineyards in twenty-five municipalities of Huesca and Zaragoza. It has 1,430 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Food and drink
The Ribera del Gállego-Cinco Villas is a protected geographical indication, recognised in 2006, covering the country wines of the wine-growing areas of the Gállego riverside and the Cinco Villas, with vineyards spread across twenty-five municipalities of the provinces of Huesca and Zaragoza, including Gurrea de Gállego, in the Huesca district of the Hoya de Huesca. It was regulated in 2003 and allows white, rosé and red wines with different minimum alcohol content. The whites use the macabeo and garnacha blanca varieties, and the reds moristel, mazuela, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, tempranillo, garnacha tinta and syrah.
