What to see and do in Sierra de Luna

Sierra de Luna
Village
Sierra de Luna, with 269 inhabitants, was until the first third of the 19th century a hamlet dependent on Luna, in the Zaragoza Cinco Villas, and its inhabitants continued to use the communal mountains of the territory of Luna, which led to the setting up in 1956 of a joint administrative board. The village preserves the church of Santa Águeda, from the 17th century, with altarpieces from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and has given its name to a well-known pasodoble, popularised among others by Manolo Escobar, which tells the story of a muleteer carrying wheat from the Cinco Villas to Zaragoza. Between 2004 and 2005 about a hundred fossil mammal footprints, some twenty million years old, were located in its territory. Among its festivities, the pilgrimage of 1 May to the sanctuary of the Virgen de Monlora stands out.

Nature
Natural site in the surroundings of the municipality of Sierra de Luna, in the Cinco Villas comarca, located on flat ground at the southern foot of the sierra that gives the village its name. It is dry farmland of lower quality, with a few small irrigated market gardens fed by the Sora irrigation channel, with no permanent watercourses. In the municipal area, ichnites (fossilised footprints) of vertebrate mammals from the Tertiary period were located in 2004 and 2005, dating back 20 million years; a hundred or so have been found in total.
