What to see and do in Herrera de los Navarros

Herrera de los Navarros
Village
Herrera de los Navarros is a municipality of 495 inhabitants in Zaragoza, at 809 metres above sea level in the Iberian System, on the banks of the río Huerva. It was known simply as Herrera until the 1916 nomenclature reform made the current name official, in memory of the Navarrese settlers who repopulated the area. Settled by Celtiberians, Romans, Arabs, Christians and Mudéjars, it preserves, a kilometre from the village, the remains of the Ibero-Roman settlement of los Castellares, walled and with a defensive ditch. The surrounding area, part of the Red Natura 2000 network, is home to vultures, golden eagles and great bustards. In August 1837, during the First Carlist War, the liberal general Buerens attacked Carlist forces here, a clash that preceded the liberal disaster in the neighbouring Villar de los Navarros.

It forms part of the Mudéjar de Aragón (Mudejar Architecture of Aragon) declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

At its highest point stands a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgen de la Sierra, whose first structures date from the 16th century, although what survives is from the 17th and 18th centuries; it is reached from Herrera de los Navarros by a short-distance footpath. The sierra forms part, together with the sierras of Águila, Peco, Pajaranca and Castellanos, of an area protected as a Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 Network, under the name Alto Huerva-Sierra de Herrera.
