What to see and do in Plenas

Plenas
Village
Plenas is a small municipality in the Campo de Belchite, in Zaragoza, with 110 inhabitants (INE 2025), on flat terrain along the sunny slope of the valley of the Santa María river. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Community of villages of Daroca as a vassal, and was the birthplace of Manuela Sancho Bonafonte, heroine of the Sieges of Zaragoza, to whom an ethnographic museum is devoted in her birth house. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, from the 16th century, with an 18th-century baroque brick tower that suffered damage in the Civil War and was restored in the early 21st century; the shrine of Nuestra Señora del Carrascal, from the 14th to the 19th centuries; and the remains of a 14th-century castle. Its festivities are on 28 August, San Agustín, and on 1 May, the Virgen del Carrascal.
Church of Plenas
Monument
The parish church of Plenas, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, was built in the 16th century, while its brick tower, in Baroque style, dates from the 18th century. The church suffered significant damage during the Civil War, and both the tower and the rest of the building were restored in the early 21st century. Plenas is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of Campo de Belchite.
Festivities of invierno de Plenas
Activity
Plenas's winter festival is held in the birthplace of Manuela Sancho, one of the heroines of the Sieges of Zaragoza, to whom an ethnographic museum is dedicated; it also preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, from the 16th century with an 18th-century Baroque tower.
Hermitage of Plenas
Monument
The hermitage of Plenas is the sanctuary of Our Lady of Carrascal, a group of buildings erected between the 14th and 19th centuries, among which the hermitage stands out, with a transept in rural baroque style. The village celebrates the feast of the Virgin of Carrascal on 1 May, a date linked to the pilgrimage organised to the sanctuary.
