Monforte de Moyuela
Village
Monforte de Moyuela is a municipality in the Jiloca comarca, in the province of Teruel, situated at 1,008 metres above sea level at the foot of the Sierra de Oriche, on the right bank of the Moyuela river, also called Nogueta or Santa María. Originally sited beside its 12th-century castle, of which only remains survive today, it held great strategic importance from the beginning of the Reconquest as a point of contact between the Ebro depression and the Iberian mountain ranges. In 1157 Ramon Berenguer IV repopulated it, granting it a charter of settlement under the fueros of Zaragoza, and its name has been documented since then as Monfort, until the current form was fixed in 1916. It preserves the parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, from the 16th to the 18th centuries. In the mid-19th century it had 496 inhabitants; today it has 84.
