What to see and do in Moyuela

Moyuela
Village
Moyuela is a municipality in the Campo de Belchite district, in the province of Zaragoza, with 221 inhabitants, situated at 725 metres above sea level and crossed by the Moyuela river, on arid dryland terrain devoted mainly to vines and cereals. Its name comes from Arabic and possibly dates back to the 8th century; in the 11th century it passed into Christian hands, the period from which the first document bearing its current name dates. Here was born the archbishop of Zaragoza Pedro Apaolaza Ramírez, who funded the extension of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, whose Mudejar tower was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2001, and where his remains rest. It also preserves the caves of Valtierra, dwellings of its first settlers, and the hermitage of San Jorge, built over an old ruined castle.

Wine Cellars and Cave Houses of Moyuela
Curiosity
Architecture carved into the rock: cave-houses and underground wine cellars that offered cheap shelter and good conservation for wine. Among them stand out the so-called Cuevas de Valtierra, which were home to the village's first settlers and are today in poor condition.
Festivities of invierno de Moyuela
Activity
Moyuela's winter festival is held in the birthplace of Pedro Apaolaza Ramírez, who attained the archbishop's mitre of Zaragoza in 1635 and funded the extension of one of the village's churches, where his remains rest.

Monument

Pedro Apaolaza Ramírez, archbishop of Zaragoza
Historical milestone
Pedro Apaolaza Ramírez was born in Moyuela on 13 July 1567 and trained at the University of Zaragoza, where he earned a doctorate in theology. Before reaching the archbishopric of Zaragoza in 1635, he held in succession the bishoprics of Barbastro, Albarracín and Teruel, and was also a deputy of the Kingdom of Aragon. As archbishop he endowed chairs at the University of Zaragoza and, in his home village, founded three chaplaincies and a teaching post in Humanities, as well as paying for the enlargement of one of the churches of Moyuela, the temple where his remains have rested since his death. Under his archbishopric, in 1642, Zaragoza proclaimed the Virgen del Pilar its patron saint, and in 1641 it declared miraculous the famous case of Miguel Juan Pellicer, the Miracle of Calanda. He died in Zaragoza in 1643.
Rosemary and thyme honey
Food and drink
The aromatic scrub of the dry farmland allows monofloral honeys of rosemary and of thyme to be obtained, as well as thousand-flower honey. The beekeeping production of Moyuela has its own fair and is sold directly by the beekeepers.
