What to see and do in Royuela

Royuela
Village
Royuela is a municipality in the Sierra de Albarracín, in Teruel, situated at 1,214 metres above sea level in the broad hollow where the río de la Fuente del Berro and the Garbe stream meet, a depression opened in Triassic sediments and closed by dolomite escarpments that form a great natural amphitheatre. It has 229 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its territory is dominated by juniper woods, with specimens of the silvery Artemisia assoana, alongside holm oaks and, on the riverbanks, poplars and willows; the fauna includes deer, roe deer, wild boar, griffon vultures and trout in its waters. The church of San Bartolomé combines 16th-17th-century ribbed vaults with 18th-century barrel-vault additions. To the east, the canyon of the Pisadas de Calomarde mill reaches almost 200 metres in depth.
Church of Royuela
Monument
Church of San Bartolomé de Royuela, in the Sierra de Albarracín, with a three-nave plan and a fabric resulting from several building phases: it preserves simple ribbed vaults from the 16th and 17th centuries in sections of the central and side naves, joined by vaults and a dome decorated with Mannerist motifs, such as coffering and diamond points, and 18th-century barrel vaults in other areas and chapels. The tower, at the foot of the church, appears to be the original structure, with three square-plan bodies and openings only in the upper section. The church also preserves a 14th-century Pietà from the village's vanished Trinitarian convent, today in poor state of conservation.
Festivities of Royuela
Activity
The patronal festivities of Royuela are celebrated on 24 August in honor of San Bartolomé, with the changing of local offices, the distribution of bread and wine, bull runs, embolada young-bull events and traditional dances; on the fourth Sunday of September the Virgen de los Dolores is also celebrated.

Food and drink
The hives settled between the pine forest and the thyme scrub produce thousand-flower and rosemary honeys packaged by hand. The short flowering season at altitude limits the harvests and concentrates the aromas.
