What to see and do in Frías de Albarracín

Frías de Albarracín
Village
Frías de Albarracín is a mountain municipality in the province of Teruel, in the comarca of the Sierra de Albarracín, situated at 1,496 metres above sea level; the Tagus, the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula, rises within its territory. It has 109 inhabitants. In 1257, by privilege of King James I, it became part of the Comunidad de Santa María de Albarracín, directly dependent on the crown. The village sits on the slope of the Castillo hill, where a settlement site from 1520 BC has been excavated, and from there the Peña Rubia and the Cañón de la Hoz can be seen. It preserves the church of la Asunción and the hermitage of San Roque, and near the village centre are the Fuente del Berro and the Fuente del Buey springs, both with picnic areas.
Source of the Tagus River
Nature
The point where the Tagus, the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula, rises at the Fuente García, within the municipal boundary of Frías de Albarracín (Teruel), at an altitude of 1,593 metres, between the peaks of the Muela de San Juan (1,830 m) and the Cerro de San Felipe (1,839 m). The source lies in the Sierra de Albarracín, within the Montes Universales, the western branch of the Iberian System and one of the peninsula's most important watersheds between the Atlantic and Mediterranean slopes. In its first ten kilometres the river drops 453 metres in elevation. In 1974 a monument commemorating the river's source was erected at a lower altitude.
Church of Frías de Albarracín
Monument
Parish church of Frías de Albarracín, next to the source of the Tagus river, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. According to the description by Pascual Madoz in the mid-19th century, the church was then completely in ruins, so a small chapel served as the parish church. The municipality also preserves several chapels, including one dedicated to the Conception.
Festivities of Frías de Albarracín
Activity
The festivities of Frías de Albarracín are held in the municipality where the Tagus rises, the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula. Nowadays the patron saint festivities, from 14 to 18 August, are the main celebrations of the village and enjoy renown throughout the Sierra de Albarracín and the nearby villages. In the past the feast of Corpus Christi and the Fiesta de los Mayos were also celebrated, now discontinued.
