What to see and do in Galve

Galve
Village
Galve is a municipality of Comunidad de Teruel, located at an altitude of about 1,180 metres and 57 kilometres from the capital along the N-420 road, with 149 inhabitants. It is known for its dinosaur ichnite sites and has a palaeontological park with a museum and life-size reproductions of species such as the Iguanodon and the Aragosaurus, a sauropod found in its municipal area alongside fossils such as the Galveosaurus. The Museo Paleontológico, on Calle Cuesta del Cura, gathers the remains discovered by José María Herrero, and from it start signposted routes such as the one along the Alfambra River or the dinosaur footprint route, which lead to the sites of Las Cerradicas and Corrales del Pelejón. It belonged to Perales de Alfambra between 1972 and 1982.
Church of Galve
Monument
The church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is the parish temple of Galve (Teruel), famous for its dinosaur ichnite sites. It is a 17th-century Baroque building constructed between 1694 and 1719, which replaced an earlier temple located next to the local castle. It has a rectangular plan with three naves and four bays, a Baroque tower of Mudejar influence at the foot of the building, and an elliptical brick dome. It holds a Baroque high altarpiece from the 18th century in polychrome stucco, restored in 1989, another altarpiece from the 17th century on the epistle side, an organ also from the 18th century, and frescoes on the Eucharist. It was declared a Bien Catalogado (a heritage-listing category, one level below Bien de Interés Cultural) of the Aragonese Cultural Heritage in 2002.
Dinosaur footprints (ichnites) of Galve
Nature
The dinosaur ichnite sites of Galve are located at several points within the municipal boundary, including Las Cerradicas and Los Corrales del Pelejón, with fossilised tracks that can be followed along the Route of the Dinosaur Tracks. They date from the Lower Cretaceous, a period from which fossils of species such as Aragosaurus, Iguanodon, Bernissartia and Galveosaurus have also been found in Galve, along with ammonites and micromammals, many discovered by the palaeontologist José María Herrero. Part of these remains is kept in the Palaeontological Museum of Galve, on Calle Cuesta del Cura, which offers guided tours.
