What to see and do in Cuevas de Almudén

Cuevas de Almudén
Village
Cuevas de Almudén is a municipality of the Cuencas Mineras, in Teruel, situated at 1,281 metres above sea level on a spur-shaped promontory, in the middle area of the Val de Jarque; its original nucleus, arranged in a circle on the old line of the wall, is still known as the castillo. Documented under its current name since 1385 —Almudén comes from the Arabic maʿdan, mine—, it now has 119 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with 192 in the mid-19th century. Its town hall, built of ashlar in the 16th or 17th century, has on the ground floor a lonja with three semicircular arches on cylindrical columns and, on the upper part, the local coat of arms with the inscription Libertad, Progreso, Administración. Beside it stands the baroque church dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Estrella.
