What to see and do in La Cañada de Verich

La Cañada de Verich
Village
La Cañada de Verich, in Catalan la Canyada de Beric, is a small municipality of the Bajo Aragón, in the Franja bordering Catalonia, at 738 metres above sea level and with 72 inhabitants. It belonged to the commandery of the Order of Calatrava throughout the Middle Ages; its church of San Blas is documented from 1324, in 1491 it received a founding charter from the Catholic Monarchs and in 1547 the title of town from Philip II. It has lived off livestock farming and the growing of olives and cereals, a crop that expanded after the frost of 1956, which killed most of the olive trees. Since the early 20th century, mines of refractory clay have been worked within its municipal area, four of which remain active today. It preserves the ermita of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, with an ashlar porch and three arches, already described by Madoz.
