What to see and do in Belmonte de San José

Belmonte de San José
Village
Belmonte de San José is a small municipality in the Teruel comarca of the Bajo Aragón, on the foothills of the mountains of the Maestrazgo, at 661 metres above sea level, through which runs the Mezquín river, a tributary of the Guadalope. It received a founding charter in 1232 from the master of the Order of Calatrava, which administered the area from its commandery of Alcañiz following the donation by Alfonso II in 1179, and obtained the title of town in 1337. The village's name incorporated the epithet Mezquín, after the river, in 1916, and in 1979, following a popular survey, it was renamed Belmonte de San José after its ermita of San José. It has 114 inhabitants, compared with 820 in 1910, and preserves the baroque church of El Salvador, begun in 1742 on an earlier medieval temple.
