What to see and do in Puértolas

Puértolas
Village
Puértolas is a mountain municipality in the Aragonese comarca of Sobrarbe, in Huesca, with 217 inhabitants, whose extensive territory, of 99.72 km², takes in the hamlets of Belsierre, Bestué, Escalona, Escuaín, Huertas de Muro, Muro de Bellós, Puyarruego, Santa Justa and Santa María, besides Puértolas itself. Part of its territory lies within the parque nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido, whose high-mountain landscapes define the municipality. It traditionally celebrates its patronal festival on 12 October, in honour of the Virgen del Pilar, a day on which these scattered settlements across Sobrarbe gather around their traditions.
Church of Puértolas
Monument
16th-century church of San Pedro, in the settlement of Puértolas; the municipal area also preserves the Gothic-Renaissance church of San Vicente Mártir, from the same century, and the remains of an old 12th-century Romanesque monastery dedicated to the saints Justa and Rufina, in other settlements of the municipality.
Escuaín Canyon
Nature
The gorges of Escuaín, in the municipal area of Puértolas, lie in the Aragonese Pyrenees, south-east of the limestone massif of Monte Perdido, within the Ordesa y Monte Perdido national park. They are formed by the Yaga river, which rises at the Cuello Viceto pass and in the Gurrundué glacial cirque, over a course of about four kilometres. The karstic morphology of the terrain has produced a network of underground cavities in the shape of a Y; three potholes, B-15, B-7 and B-1 (Fuentes de Escuaín), converge in the cavity known as La Turbina, within a system with 1,151 metres of vertical drop and more than seven kilometres of passages.
Festivities of Puértolas
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Puértolas.
Sierra Ferrera
Nature
A limestone sierra of Jurassic and Cretaceous origin, located between the valleys of the Ésera and the Cinca, whose highest point is the Peña Montañesa, at 2,291 metres, at its western end. It is a klippe detached from the Cotiella thrust sheet, displaced during the Alpine orogeny, with abundant karst features and caves hollowed out by water in the limestone. Its S-shaped ridge separates the Espuña valley, to the north, from the La Fueva depression, to the south, a landscape also shaped by Pleistocene glaciation. On the southern slope lie the settlements known as Bajo Peñas, whose main municipality is Laspuña, seat of the Real Monasterio de San Victorián. The sierra's name comes from the iron ores that were historically extracted there.
Pyrenean veal of the Sobrarbe
Food and drink
The Pyrenean cattle breed is raised extensively, using the comarca's high meadows during the summer and valley feed in winter; its meat, red and low in fat, is prepared over embers or stewed.
