What to see and do in Laspuña

Laspuña
Village
Laspuña is a municipality in the comarca of Sobrarbe, in the province of Huesca, where the use of Aragonese is still preserved among older residents. It is documented from 1085, when it appears as 'Illas Sponas' in a text of the monastery of San Victorián, whose ecclesiastical property it was until the early modern period. Located at the entrance to the cañón de Añisclo, it was one of the timber-rafting villages of the río Cinca: from the 17th century, thanks to the boom in forestry, its logs were floated downstream as nabatas to the Mediterranean, and Laspuña became a cradle of great nabateros, a trade now revived in historical re-enactment festivals. From Roman times it preserves a bridge pier over the Cinca. Its attached hamlets are Ceresa, El Casal and the depopulated Socastiello.
Church of Laspuña
Monument
Church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, from the 16th century and in late Gothic style, rebuilt in the 1940s after its destruction in 1938, during the Civil War.
Festivities of Laspuña
Activity
Laspuña (Sobrarbe, Huesca) celebrates its patron saint festival in honour of San Mateo on 21 September. In winter it is joined by the festivals of San Sebastián, on 22 January, led by the men of the village, and of Santa Águeda, reserved for the women, celebrated around the same dates.
The last commercial nabata (log raft) of the Cinca
Historical milestone
That year the last log rafts assembled in Laspuña, Escalona and Puyarruego went down on their way to Tortosa; the reservoirs and the trucks put an end to a centuries-old trade that was only revived as a festival decades later.
