What to see and do in El Pueyo de Araguás

El Pueyo de Araguás
Village
El Pueyo de Araguás is a municipality in the province of Huesca, in the comarca of Sobrarbe, between the valle del Cinca and that of La Fueva, with 180 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread between the town of the same name and hamlets such as Araguás and San Victorián de Asán. The village preserves the look of a Sobrarbe settlement of centuries past, with traditional houses around a central street and an entrance defended below the church; the Casa Coronas, from 1549, is the oldest known in the comarca. It is home to the monastery of San Victorián, one of the oldest in Spain and the spiritual centre of medieval Sobrarbe ever since the Italian hermit who gives it its name was buried there; on its territory also stand the ruins of the castillo de Samitier, above the desfiladero de Entremón.
Monastery of San Victorián
Monument
The Real Monasterio de San Victorián stands in the settlement of Los Molinos, in the municipal area of El Pueyo de Araguás (Sobrarbe, Huesca), at 1,200 metres above sea level on the slopes of the sierra Ferrera. Some researchers place its origin in the 6th century, under the name San Martín de Asán, linked to the Italian hermit san Victorián, which would make it the oldest monastery on the peninsula, although this can only be documented from the 10th century onward. It came to be, according to tradition, the pantheon of the kings of Sobrarbe, and under Sancho Ramírez it underwent a great building boom as a guarantor of royal power in the area. Most of the surviving buildings date from the 16th century. Disentailed in 1835, in the 1950s it was stripped of its movable property, which was distributed between Barbastro Cathedral and other churches in the area.
Festivities of El Pueyo de Araguás
Activity
Patron saint festival of El Pueyo de Araguás in honour of Santa Engracia, whose main festival is celebrated on 16 April, next to the Monasterio de San Victorián, on which the village's parish church of the Santa Cruz formerly depended and which was the most powerful monastic centre of Sobrarbe and Ribagorza. The local festive calendar is completed by the bonfires of San Blas, on 3 February, and the pilgrimage to the hermitage of Santa Ana, on 26 July.
Castle of Samitier
Monument
The castle of Samitier stands on the Tozal de Samitier, two kilometres from the village of the same name, above the Cinca gorge known as the Entremón, in the Huesca Sobrarbe. It formed part of the system of fortifications on the Christian frontier facing the Muslim territories and played a military role during the campaigns of the Cinca valley, including that of Barbastro in 1063-1064; its church, dedicated to San Emeterio and San Celedonio, in Romanesque style, is documented from 1055. Of the complex there survive a hexagonal tower of at least two storeys, with arrow slits on its façades, a cistern and an advanced detached tower, an albarrana tower, sited 500 metres further on, which served as a watchtower. It is today largely in ruins, and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2006.
The death of Saint Victorian in Asán
Historical milestone
Around the middle of the 6th century, the Italian hermit San Victorián, who had governed the monastery, died and was buried at San Martín de Asán; his tomb turned the monastery into the political and spiritual center of the Sobrarbe throughout the Middle Ages.
