What to see and do in Boltaña

Boltaña
Village
Boltaña is a town in the province of Huesca, in Aragón, capital of the comarca of Sobrarbe together with Aínsa, with 1,089 inhabitants (INE 2025). It sits at 639 metres of altitude in the valles de los ríos Ara y Sieste, cuenca del Cinca, and part of its territory lies within the parque natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara. It was the capital of Roman Boletania, under the name Municipium Boletanum, and the Visigothic king Gundemaro even minted coins at the Volotania mint. Its castle, of Arab origin, stands on the monte de San Martín and is already documented in the time of Sancho Ramírez de Aragón; before the Reconquest it had been a Muslim stronghold under governors appointed by the caliph Abderramán III. It preserves a medieval historic centre around this fortification.
Castle of Boltaña
Monument
The castillo de Boltaña, declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2006, stands above the historic centre of the town. It was built in the 9th century by the Saracens of Sobrarbe to defend the valle del Ara against the Christians during the Reconquest; in the year 941 the town passed into the hands of King García Sánchez I de Pamplona. Between the 11th and 12th centuries, Boltaña gradually lost strategic importance in favour of Aínsa, to which Alfonso I granted a fuero in 1124. Of the fortress there remain sections of the pentagonal wall, a tower hexagonal on the outside and square inside, now badly deteriorated, a vaulted entrance gate and two arrow slits on the east and south faces, all built in ashlar masonry.
Festivities of Boltaña
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Boltaña, called the Fiestas de la Convivencia, are held from 17 to 24 August, with the traditional palotiau (stick dance) on the 21st as one of their most characteristic events.
Festivities of la Virgen de Fajanillas
Activity
The traditional pilgrimage festival from Boltaña to the hermitage of the Virgen de Fajanillas.
The creation of the judicial district of Boltaña
Historical milestone
In the 1834 judicial reorganization, Boltaña became the seat of a judicial district covering all of the Sobrarbe and much of the upper Ribagorza, more than four thousand square kilometers of mountains and valleys.
Pastillos de nuez
Food and drink
Sweet turnovers of thin dough filled with walnut chopped with sugar and honey, baked for the festivities and for Christmas; in the Sobrarbe they are also made with pumpkin or almond and are the most widespread homemade sweet.
