Sierra Ferrera Nature · Puértolas, Sobrarbe, Huesca A limestone sierra of Jurassic and Cretaceous origin, located between the valleys of the Ésera and the Cinca, whose highest point is the Peña Montañesa, at 2,291 metres, at its western end. It is a klippe detached from the Cotiella thrust sheet, displaced during the Alpine orogeny, with abundant karst features and caves hollowed out by water in the limestone. Its S-shaped ridge separates the Espuña valley, to the north, from the La Fueva depression, to the south, a landscape also shaped by Pleistocene glaciation. On the southern slope lie the settlements known as Bajo Peñas, whose main municipality is Laspuña, seat of the Real Monasterio de San Victorián. The sierra's name comes from the iron ores that were historically extracted there. Photo: Juan R. Lascorz (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Puértolas
