What to see and do in Plan

Plan
Village
Plan is the main settlement and head of the valle de Chistau, in Sobrarbe, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, at 1,060 metres; its inhabitants are known as planenses. It stretches along the cuenca del río Cinqueta, a tributary of the Cinca, surrounded by peaks of 2,000 to 3,000 metres, among them the Posets, the second highest in the Pyrenees at 3,375 m. In the village, with its narrow, long streets, noble houses are preserved beside the Romanesque church of San Esteban, from the 16th century, and a defensive tower listed in the catalogue of Castillos de Aragón; the chistabín dialect can still be heard there. Plan made the news in 1985 when eighty women arrived by bus in response to an advertisement placed by the village bachelors, from which around forty couples emerged; today Saravillo and other hamlets keep alive the artisanal production of cheeses and yoghurts.
Chistau Valley
Nature
The Chistau Valley, or Gistau valley, is a Pyrenean region of Sobrarbe (Huesca) that stretches along the upper course of the Cinqueta river, between peaks of 2,000 to 3,000 metres. It comprises the municipalities of Plan, San Juan de Plan and Gistaín, with 663 inhabitants in total, and settlements such as Saravillo, Serveto and the depopulated Señes. To the west, the Cruz de Guardia pass connects it with Bielsa, and to the north the Plan and Pez passes put it in contact with France. Notable is the Tuca Llardana or Posets, at 3,375 metres, the second-highest peak in the Pyrenees, along with alpine lakes such as Millares, Barbarisa and Basa de la Mora. The inhabitants speak chistabino, an Aragonese dialect native to the area, and live from livestock farming, agriculture and forestry.
Church of Plan
Monument
16th-century parish church of San Esteban, remodelled in the 19th and 20th centuries, set among the traditional stone houses of Plan, in the Chistau valley.
Festivities of Plan
Activity
Plan, capital of the Chistau valley, celebrates its main feast on 7 September; in July a pilgrimage is also held for Santa Isabel and on 15 August another feast is celebrated, in addition to the October livestock fair.
The caravan of women to Plan
Historical milestone
After watching a western film in the bar titled precisely Caravana de mujeres (1951), the unmarried residents of Plan, in the Huesca Pyrenees, decided to imitate it: at the time the village had more than forty unmarried men and only one unmarried woman, since most had emigrated. They placed an advertisement in the newspaper looking for women between 20 and 40 years old for marriage in a Pyrenean village; in 1985 more than eighty women arrived by bus, and the gathering resulted in 33 marriages that breathed renewed vitality into the village.
Artisan cheeses of the Chistau valley
Food and drink
In Saravillo and other centers of the valley, artisan cheeses and yogurts are made with cow's and goat's milk from the flocks that graze the high pastures; they are among the best-known products of the Sobrarbe.
