What to see and do in Chía

Chía
Village
Chía is a municipality of Ribagorza, in the province of Huesca, situated at the foot of the mountain range bearing its name, by the Ventamillo gorge, in the Benasque Valley. It has 90 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name, of pre-Indo-European origin, would mean the lands are cultivated, referring to the barley, oat and rye crops maintained until the late 20th century. It preserves the 12th-century Romanesque hermitage of San Martín, the 18th-century parish church of San Vicente, and the 19th-century hermitage of La Encontrada, in whose honour the local feast is held on 8 September. The village still preserves patués, a variety of Aragonese native to the valley. The PR-HU 51 route passes through Chía, linking it with Plan, in the Gistau Valley, via the Collado de Sahún.
Ventamillo Gorge
Nature
The Ventamillo gorge is the defile that the Ésera river opens between the Chía mountain range and the Turbón range, in the Ribagorza of Huesca, with vertical walls of more than 300 metres that narrow to barely 2,200 metres in its central stretch and extend along some ten kilometres of limestone rock. It was formed by the erosion of meltwater following the retreat, some 40,000 years ago, of the Ésera glacier, which reached as much as 36 kilometres in length. The road that runs through it, today the N-260, was opened in 1916 to give access to the Benasque valley. On its walls grows the endemic plant Petrocopsis pseudoviscosa, and wallcreepers, bearded vultures and golden eagles fly over the canyon.
