What to see and do in Gistaín

Gistaín
Village
Gistaín, in the valle de Chistau, sits at the foot of the macizo de Posets-Maladeta, home to the highest peaks in the Aragonese Pyrenees, on the eastern edge of Sobrarbe, province of Huesca, with 114 inhabitants (INE 2025). Part of its territory is occupied by the parque natural Posets-Maladeta, and the río Cinqueta rises in its mountains, running through the valley until it joins the Cinca at Salinas de Sin. Its architecture preserves two defensive towers, that of Casa Tardán and that of Casa Rins, as well as the tower of the church of San Vicente Mártir. Among its festivals, the carnival stands out, with a figure called the muyén that is tried and burned on Piñata Sunday, and in January the festival of the trucos or cencerrada, in which the villagers go through the villages of the valley at night ringing cowbells.
Church of Gistaín
Monument
Church of San Vicente Mártir, built in the 16th century; the tower, above the sacristy, is from the 17th century.
Posets-Maladeta Massif
Nature
The Posets-Maladeta massif, on the eastern edge of Sobrarbe, contains the highest peaks of the Aragonese Pyrenees and has been protected as a natural park since 1994, covering 33,440 hectares spread across the municipal areas of Benasque, Gistaín, Montanuy, Sahún and San Juan de Plan. It is home to the Aneto, at 3,404 metres the highest peak in the Pyrenees, along with other peaks over 3,000 metres such as the Posets and the Pico Maldito, as well as moraines and glacial lakes (ibones) such as those of Vallibierna and Cregüeña. Vegetation is arranged in bands with altitude, from rowans and birches to beeches, pines and firs, giving way at the highest elevations to mountain pine; its fauna includes marmots, chamois, griffon vultures, bearded vultures and golden eagles.
Festivities of Gistaín
Activity
The patron saint festival of Gistaín, in the Chistau valley (Huesca), is held on 20 August in honour of San Joaquín, with processions and traditional costumes, and continues the following day with the pilgrimage of San Fabián to a nearby hermitage, where chistavine dances are danced and the Gozos de San Fabián are sung. The village's festive calendar also includes, in January, the trucos de San Antón, a nocturnal bell-ringing round in which residents go through all the villages of the valley carrying large cowbells, and a carnival that retains features of its own from the Aragonese Pyrenean carnival, with the figure of the muyén paraded on a donkey while the young people ask for food from house to house.
