What to see and do in Alcampell

Alcampell
Village
Alcampell is a municipality in the Huesca comarca of La Litera, situated 98 km from Huesca, which in 1831 obtained, by concession of Ferdinand VII, the privilege of separating from Tamarite de Litera and becoming its own municipality; freed from that dependency, it came to exceed two thousand inhabitants during the 20th century, although today it has 678. The municipal area, situated on the boundary where the comarca's landscape changes, was chosen in Muslim times for the building of a defensive fortress, and the earliest documents mentioning Alcampell, from the year 1098, place it under the rule of the Counts of Urgel, who reconquered it between 1090 and 1091 with Ermengol IV. Its name, of Catalan origin, means "small field".
Church of Alcampell
Monument
Church of Saint Margaret of Alcampell, one of the few examples of Mudéjar style north of the Ebro, probably built in the last third of the 16th century; the tower, square in plan becoming octagonal, was added later, in the Baroque period. The roof tiles and floor tiles were made at the old tile kiln on the outskirts of the village. The nave has four rectangular bays, and the arches of the side chapels preserve plasterwork and lace-like motifs from after the 16th century. In 1955 a clock with a siren that sounds twice a day was installed in the bell tower. It is listed as a Bien Inventariado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés (a listing in Aragon's inventory of cultural heritage).
Festivities of Alcampell
