What to see and do in Albelda

Albelda
Village
Albelda is a municipality in the Huesca comarca of La Litera, in Aragon, set on a plain between two mountains, to the north of which rises a gypsum formation known as las Chesses, which gives the landscape its characteristic colouring. Its name comes from the Arabic al-balda, "the village". It was a lordship of the Counts of Urgel in the 13th and 14th centuries and later of the Peralta family, until Philip IV raised it to the status of a town in 1629. It preserves the Cross of Albelda, a Gothic boundary cross declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
