What to see and do in Baells

Baells
Village
Baells is a municipality in the comarca of La Litera, in the province of Huesca, Aragon, located in the Pyrenean foothills beside the Requé ravine, a tributary of the Noguera Ribagorzana; it also comprises the settlements of Nachá and Zurita. On the hills of La Litera it is one of the dry-farming villages where the almond that gives its name to a comarcal fair is harvested in September. Its territory was already inhabited in Iberian times by the Ilergetes tribe, and remains of a Roman settlement and a villa are preserved. The place name is documented from 1092, as Badells, and in 1096 the town was conquered by the Urgell nobleman Ponç Guerau de Cabrera. Its fortress later belonged to the Maull family and, from the 17th century, to the Desvalls, marquises of Alfarrás, who financed the castle.
Fortified Palace of the Desvalls
Monument
The fortified palace of the Desvalls family, in Baells (La Litera, Huesca), listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), stands next to the parish church, in the centre of the town. It is a rectangular residential building of about 24 by 15 metres, with a tower projecting at one of its corners. Built of ashlar, its main façade is topped by a brick section with a gallery of semicircular arches in Aragonese Renaissance style. The tower preserves twin Gothic-style windows and is covered by a hip roof.
Almond of la Litera
Food and drink
The dry-farmed almond trees of the Litera hills yield a hard-grained almond harvested in September; it is eaten toasted and salted, ground for turrón and sugared almonds, and gives its name to a comarca fair.
