What to see and do in Baldellou

Baldellou
Village
Baldellou, called Valdellou in Catalan, is a municipality of Huesca province in the comarca of La Litera with 81 inhabitants, located in the Llitera Alta, beside the river of the Molí del Pubill and near the Santa Ana reservoir. Its name may derive from Val de Lou or vall del llop, 'valley of the wolves'; the earliest documents date from 1090, and around 1092 it was reconquered by Giraldo II de Cabrera, viscount of Áger. From the 15th century it belonged to the lordship of the López de Mendoza, and in 1646 its holder became the first count of Robres. The town, with doorways from the 16th to the 20th century, preserves the Romanesque church of the Asunción from the 13th century, enlarged in the 16th, the hermitage of the Virgen de Vilavella and the Torreón del Pubill, a 14th-century tower some thirty metres high.
Tower of Baldellou
Monument
A great manor tower, also known as the tower of the Albano family or the Pubill tower, standing on a rocky edge of the hill on which the town of Baldellou sits, in the comarca of La Litera. It is a massive ashlar structure of rectangular plan, about fourteen by nine metres and almost thirty metres high, whose outer wall partly clads the rock at its base. On all sides open twin windows in Gothic style with Catalan influence, some damaged or walled up, and on the rear façade three corbels survive that once supported a latrine. Access is through a large emblazoned gateway into an old courtyard and from there, through a pointed doorway, into the interior, laid out over four floors with vaulted ceilings now badly deteriorated.
Festivities of Baldellou
Activity
Festivities of Baldellou on 15 August, main feast in honour of Nuestra Señora, and on 15 May for San Isidro, in a village of barely 81 inhabitants that preserves the 12th-13th-century Romanesque church of la Asunción and the noble tower house of El Pubill.
