What to see and do in Alcalá de Gurrea

Alcalá de Gurrea
Village
Alcalá de Gurrea is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca on the banks of the río Sotón, 29 kilometres west of the capital, on a hill of gypsum layers that gives the landscape a distinctive colour; its plains extend as far as the Sotonera reservoir, between this municipality and Montmesa. It is documented from March 1099, when Pedro I of Aragon confirmed to the monastery of Montearagón the church of the place. With a continental Mediterranean climate, cold winters and rainfall exceeding 400 mm a year, from a viewpoint atop the village one can see the steppe of La Violada, habitat of steppe birds such as the little bustard, the black-bellied sandgrouse or the pin-tailed sandgrouse. Next to the Sotonera reservoir it preserves the Tormos colony, a modernist settlement built to house the workers of the reservoir.
