What to see and do in Zaidín

Zaidín
Village
Zaidín, Saidí in Catalan, is a municipality in the Bajo Cinca, in Huesca, on the left bank of the Cinca river, with 1,807 inhabitants (INE 2025) and an economy based on farming and livestock, chiefly pig farming. Its name comes from the Arabic Saedin, 'arm of water' or 'land between rivers'. Zaidín passed from the Infante Pedro, who granted its castle to Pedro Ramón de Eril in 1092, to the Charterhouse of Scala Dei by bequest of the Patriarch of Alexandria in 1333, and from there to Guillén de Moncada in 1386, in a succession of lay and monastic lords. The old town, walled from the 16th century until the mid-20th, preserved five gates and enclosed the castle of the lords of Zaidín; today part of the wall survives, along with the parish church of San Juan Bautista, with its Baroque portal.

Festivities of invierno de Zaidín (San Blas)
Activity
Zaidín's calendar of local festivals marks 16 January, the feast of San Antón, as the municipality's winter festival; no confirmation has been found of an actual festival of San Blas, so the sources disagree on the exact dedication.
Lordship of Zaidín and the monastery of Scala Dei
Historical milestone
The infante Pedro handed the castle of Zaidín to Pedro Ramón de Eril in 1092. In 1333 the patriarch of Alexandria bequeathed the place to the charterhouse of Scala Dei and in 1386 Pedro IV ceded it to Guillén de Moncada, in a succession of seigneurial and monastic hands.
Snails a la llauna
Food and drink
The snails gathered after the rains are prepared in a tin tray in the oven or over embers, with garlic, oil and paprika, and are accompanied by alioli. It is a work-gang dish at festivities and country meals in the Catalan-speaking towns of the comarca.
