What to see and do in Chalamera

Chalamera
Village
Chalamera is a municipality in the Bajo Cinca, in the province of Huesca, Aragón, next to the confluence of the Cinca and Alcanadre rivers, with about 120 inhabitants. On 27 November 1143 Ramon Berenguer IV granted the town to the Order of the Hospital, which held it at least until the end of the 18th century, in 1785; on the summit of the mountain where the village sits, known as 'el castillo', there was a Templar fortress of which few remains survive. Here was born, on 3 February 1901, the writer Ramón J. Sender, author of 'Réquiem por un campesino español', exiled in 1939 and died in San Diego in 1982. In 1975 local protests halted the project to build two nuclear power plants. It preserves the church of San Martín and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Chalamera.
Hermitage of Santa María de Chalamera
Monument
The hermitage of Santa María, built with limestone ashlar, is one of the great Romanesque landmarks of the Bajo Cinca. It stands halfway between Chalamera and Alcolea de Cinca, near the confluence of the Cinca and Alcanadre rivers, and was formerly a priory on the branch of the Way of St James that ran from Catalonia to Sigena; it belonged to the bishopric of Roda before the Templars of Monzón built the present building towards the end of the 12th century. With a Latin-cross plan and a single nave with a triple-apsed head, its portal stands out, with six archivolts on columns with historiated capitals decorated with human and animal figures. Inside, a Visigothic sarcophagus decorated with palms and pine cones is preserved. On 25 April, the feast of Saint Mark, and the following Sunday, the church hosts a pilgrimage.
Festivities of Chalamera
Activity
Patronal festivities of Chalamera on 11 November, in honour of San Martín; on 16 August San Roque is celebrated and on 25 April, the feast of San Marcos, a pilgrimage is held to a hermitage in the municipality. The village's festive calendar opens earlier, on 17 January, with San Antón.
Festivities of invierno de Chalamera
Activity
Around 20 January a bonfire is lit in Chalamera with wood gathered that morning, and potatoes, longaniza and ribs are roasted and washed down with local wine; it is the minor winter festival, distinct from the main one of San Martín, on 11 November.
Hospitaller commandery of Chalamera
Historical milestone
In 1143 Ramón Berenguer IV handed Chalamera to the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, which kept it under its jurisdiction until the end of the eighteenth century. From that period comes the Romanesque hermitage raised at the confluence of the Cinca and the Alcanadre.
