What to see and do in Velilla de Cinca

Velilla de Cinca
Village
Velilla de Cinca, in Catalan Vilella de Cinca, is a municipality in the Bajo Cinca, in Huesca, located south of Zaidín, on the right bank of the Cinca river. In 1252 King James I of Aragon granted its castle to Ramón de Moncada, who three years later sold it to the monastery of Abengania, deeds confirmed by James II in 1326. It preserves a Roman necropolis reused as a medieval settlement, the Baroque parish church of San Lorenzo and the hermitage of San Valero, from the 13th century, with an inverted liturgical orientation. It celebrates its patronal festival, of Sant Valeret, on 17 February, besides those of San Valero and San Lorenzo. The municipality keeps alive the pig slaughter, which in winter yields longaniza, chorizo, morcilla and minced-meat balls dried in the cold of the riverside. It has 505 inhabitants.
Hermitage of San Valero de Velilla de Cinca
Monument
The hermitage of Saint Valerius, from the 13th century, was built on the remains of a Roman mausoleum that today forms its base: a podium visible on the east and north façades, with courses of very square-cut ashlar crowned by a moulding, similar to the mausoleum of Fabara. The church, with a single nave, has an orientation reversed from the usual one, with the apse facing west and the main portal facing east; its arches, slightly pointed, already show an influence of early Gothic over the late Romanesque, also visible in the plant and geometric decoration of the portal's capitals. It gives its name to the festivities of Sant Valeret, celebrated on 17 February and distinct from the feast of Saint Lawrence, on 10 August, patron of the village's Baroque parish church.
