What to see and do in Ontiñena

Ontiñena
Village
Ontiñena, situated at the foot of the sierra that bears its name, on the right bank of the Alcanadre river, is documented from December 1194, when Alfonso II of Aragon bequeathed it in his will to the monastery of Sigena; Pope Innocent III confirmed the donation in 1207 and the monastery was still its lord in 1610. It preserves the Gothic church of Santa María la Mayor, with a late Romanesque portal, a single nave with three chapels and a polygonal apse of Cistercian appearance; its 15th-century altarpiece, destroyed in 1936, is known only from photographs. Its municipal area also has Roman sites from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, in the Puntal area. Every 9 May the pilgrimage to the hermitage of San Gregorio is held, and on 5 February, the feast of Santa Águeda.

Alcanadre River at its mouth
Nature
The Alcanadre rises in the Sierra de Galardón and runs through the north of the province of Huesca until it flows into the Cinca near Ballobar, after a course of about 42 km. In its upper stretch it crosses the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara natural park, forming deep ravines and gorges in Eocene limestone much frequented by canyoners; in its final stretch it opens into a channel up to a kilometre wide between the arid hills of Los Monegros. It receives the Used, Guatizalema and Flumen rivers on its right bank, and the Mascún and Isuala on its left. Ontiñena, only 5 km from the riverbed, lies within the area of influence of this final stretch, together with Sena, Villanueva de Sigena, Chalamera and Ballobar.
Festivities of invierno de Ontiñena (San Antón)
