Hermitage of Santa María de Chalamera Monument · Chalamera, Bajo Cinca, Huesca The hermitage of Santa María, built with limestone ashlar, is one of the great Romanesque landmarks of the Bajo Cinca. It stands halfway between Chalamera and Alcolea de Cinca, near the confluence of the Cinca and Alcanadre rivers, and was formerly a priory on the branch of the Way of St James that ran from Catalonia to Sigena; it belonged to the bishopric of Roda before the Templars of Monzón built the present building towards the end of the 12th century. With a Latin-cross plan and a single nave with a triple-apsed head, its portal stands out, with six archivolts on columns with historiated capitals decorated with human and animal figures. Inside, a Visigothic sarcophagus decorated with palms and pine cones is preserved. On 25 April, the feast of Saint Mark, and the following Sunday, the church hosts a pilgrimage.
