Somiedo Natural Park covers 29,122 hectares in the central area of the Cantabrian Mountains and coincides entirely with the concejo of Somiedo; it was declared a natural park in 1988 and a biosphere reserve by Unesco in 2000. It is the great refuge of the Cantabrian brown bear, home, according to studies, to between 40 and 50 percent of the entire population of the mountain range, alongside deer, wolves, chamois, roe deer, otters and wildcats. Its forests of beech, oak, yew and birch cover a quarter of the park, and its glacial valleys hold high-altitude lakes and brañas with teitos, cabins with a vegetation-covered roof traditionally used by the vaqueiros de alzada.
