What to see and do in Cabranes

Cabranes
Village
Cabranes is a cider-making concejo of Asturias, with around 1,090 inhabitants and its capital at Santa Eulalia, part of the Mancomunidad Comarca de la Sidra and known for its Rice Pudding Festival. Rural and pastoral in character, its terrain barely exceeds 600 metres, with the peaks of Incós and Montaliñu as its highest points, and it is watered by the Sales and Viña rivers. It preserves megalithic burial mounds on the border with Villaviciosa and remains of hillfort culture at the Coroña Castru. In Viñón, a school from 1907 houses the Museum of the Asturian Rural School, and there too the church of San Julián mixes pre-Romanesque and Romanesque features.
Museum of la Escuela Rural de Viñón
Monument
It occupies the 1907 school designed by Javier Aguirre Iturralde in Viñón, a single-room school built for 120 pupils, and recreates with original desks, maps and exercise books how teaching was carried out in the Asturian hamlet before depopulation. The building, the work of the provincial architect, was inaugurated in 1908, and the museum, which belongs to the network of ethnographic museums of Asturias, opened in August 2002. It offers a view of rural education from the late 19th century until 1970, with a wide collection of school material: books, notebooks, primers, maps and slate boards.
Cabranes Rice Pudding Festival
Activity
The Festival del Arroz con Leche has been held in the concejo of Cabranes since 1980, coinciding with the local feast of San Francisco de Paula. On Sunday morning the Cofradía del Arroz con Leche names as Grand Master the person who, by virtue of age, holds the most awards from previous editions, and the town council pays tribute to the concejo's elders; the Mercáu Tradicional de Artesanía y Productos Agroalimentarios is also held. The day includes the saint's procession, the handing out and sale of servings of the dessert, and a competition, with prizes awarded around two in the afternoon. It was declared a festival of regional tourist interest in 2004.
