What to see and do in Caravia

Caravia
Village
Caravia is the third-smallest concejo in Asturias, between the Sueve mountain range and the Cantabrian Sea, forming, together with Parres and Piloña, the Mancomunidad de la Comarca del Sueve since 2006; its settlements are Prado, Los Duesos and Duyos, and its highest point is El Fito, at 631 metres. To the north, beaches follow one another between cliffs. It preserves human remains from the Paleolithic, in the rock shelters of Les Vaques and La Pongueta, and a dolmenic tumulus next to the Beciella beach. At Picu el Castru, Aurelio del Llano excavated in 1917 a prehistoric fortification with a 225-metre perimeter. It lived off fluorite until its mines closed, costing it more than a quarter of its population, and it preserves the church of Santiago, from the 17th century, of monastic origin; today it has 486 inhabitants.
Mountain range of el Sueve
Nature
A limestone massif protected as a landscape, rising barely five kilometres from the sea and culminating in the Picu Pienzu, at 1,161 metres; beside it stands the adjoining Sierra del Fito, with a viewpoint over the coast and the interior and famous for the Subida Internacional al Fito. The protected landscape of the Sueve, declared in 1994, covers 8,112 hectares spread across the municipalities of Colunga, Caravia, Ribadesella, Parres and Piloña. Its beech and yew woods shelter fallow deer, red deer, foxes and wild boar, as well as birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture and the bearded vulture; on its pastures the asturcón, the native Asturian pony, lives semi-wild alongside casina cattle. In Gobiendes, on the northern slope, an interpretation centre opened in 2007 explains these features.
Beach of la Espasa
Nature
An open stretch of sand marking the boundary with the neighbouring municipality of Colunga, one of only three in a municipality with just over four kilometres of coastline; the Northern Way of St James passes alongside it. At low tide it joins the neighbouring La Isla beach, with which it shares facilities, and gives access to those of El Pozo de las Pipas and El Barrigón. It is 1,200 metres long, with a residential setting, parking, a coastal promenade and, in season, a lifeguard, showers, beach bars and a surf school. The pilgrim on the coastal route crosses here the bridge over the river that gives the beach its name before entering Colunga, and finds the pilgrims' hostel in the nearby village of La Isla.
