What to see and do in Sariego

Sariego
Village
Sariego is a municipality of Asturias in the Oviedo district, a valley surrounded by not very high mountains where the Nora river rises; it runs through the municipality for six kilometres before passing into Siero on its way to the Nalón. Its name may come from the Indo-European root sar-, "place abounding in water," as is also recalled by the saltwater spring of Pozo Saláu. It has 1,252 inhabitants, four in ten of whom still work in dairy cattle farming, and it preserves the Romanesque church of Santa María de Narzana, from the 12th century; it was declared Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias in 2006. Its main festivals are those of Santiago, on the weekend before 25 July, and San Pedrín de la Cueva, on the third Sunday of August, and in recent years traditions such as the esfoyaza have been revived.
