What to see and do in Bimenes

Bimenes
Village
Bimenes is a concejo in the centre-east of Asturias, in the comarca of Oviedo, with its capital at Martimporra, 32 kilometres from the city of Oviedo. It has around 1,640 inhabitants, far fewer than when it depended on coal mining, an activity for which its residents — nicknamed yerbatos because they sold grass to the mining stables to feed the mules — supplied fodder. In 1997 it was the first concejo to declare the Asturian language official, a gesture later imitated by other municipalities. It preserves the palace of Martimporra and remains of hillforts such as those of Pico Castiello, with Roman pottery, and Neolithic tumulus tombs at Piedrafita and Lancosa.
