What to see and do in Carballeda de Avia

Carballeda de Avia
Village
Carballeda de Avia is a wine-growing concello in the comarca of Ribeiro (Ourense), with around 1,200 inhabitants spread across eight parishes, between the Faro and Suído mountain ranges. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the counts of Ribadavia, Lemos and Monterrei, and to the monasteries of Celanova, Melón and Oseira; from that period survive the Romanesque church of Abelenda das Penas, linked to the Order of the Temple, and that of San Pedro de Beiro, with a cruceiro in its forecourt. The church of Muimenta preserves Romanesque fabric, next to a threshing floor surrounded by hórreos; that of San Miguel, in Carballeda de Avia itself, is Baroque. On its territory rises Pena Corneira, a natural monument famous for its whimsical granite formations.
Pena Corneira
Nature
Granite mountain range that extends as a continuation of the Serra do Suído between the municipalities of Carballeda de Avia, Leiro and Avión, in the O Ribeiro district, between the basins of the rivers Avia and Miño. Its relief, formed by a batholith of Hercynian granites, combines rocky ridges, domes, sunken corridors and boulder chaos, including the crest that crowns the mountain. In the lower areas grow oak woods with some Pyrenean oak, chestnut and laurel trees, with gorse and broom scrub in the undergrowth, while at higher altitudes birch and holly appear alongside the oak; the streams retain riverside woodland of alders and ash trees. It was declared a natural monument in December 2007 and covers almost a thousand hectares.
Church of Abelenda das Penas
Monument
Romanesque temple of one of the eight parishes of the concello, wedged among granite outcrops, traditionally linked to the Order of the Temple. It stands in a territory where the monasteries of Celanova, Melón and Oseira also left their mark, and along with the church of Muimenta it is the best medieval testimony of the municipality.
The natural monument of Pena Corneira
Nature
A protected granite massif of some 998 hectares, covered with oak woods and sown with eroded boulders bearing popular names. It is crowned by the Pena Corneira proper, a vertical crag ten metres high.
