What to see and do in San Amaro

San Amaro
Village
San Amaro is a concello in the comarca of Carballiño, in the province of Ourense, with a little over a thousand inhabitants. Its municipality preserves remains from the Palaeolithic beside the castro of San Cibrao de Las, and burial mounds and petroglyphs from the Bronze Age; in the parish of Eiras there are petroglyphs oriented toward the summer solstice and toward the castro itself, as well as the Romanesque church of San Fiz de Navío. San Cibrao de Las, shared with neighbouring Punxín, is one of the largest Iron Age settlements on the peninsula and is possibly identified with the Lámbrica mentioned by the geographer Mela; at Eiras a Roman altar dedicated to the god Bandua of Lámbrica also appeared. The neighbouring Mount San Trocado, with its own castro, served as a watchtower over the routes to the Barca landing.
Hillfort of San Cibrao de Las
Nature
One of the largest excavated Castro-culture settlements in Galicia, called A Cidade: two walled enclosures adding up to 95,900 square metres — some ten hectares — between croa and antecroa, the upper and lower enclosures, with 384 metres from north to south by 314 from east to west, above the river Barbantiño. It was inhabited between the second century BC and the second AD and the inscriptions found in it identify it with Lansbrica. The first campaigns were directed by López Cuevillas in 1922 and only fifteen per cent has been excavated.
Mount of San Trocado
Nature
Monte de San Trocado, 550 metres high, rises on the right bank of the river Miño, and its summit, shared between the municipalities of Punxín and San Amaro, is crowned by a chapel whose inscription dates its construction to 1739, although it is thought it may have been built over an earlier structure; it holds a stone carving of the saint, whose feast day is celebrated on 15 May, and beneath it are preserved the remains of a castro, notable for its wall, which served as a lookout over the land routes and navigation of the Miño. From the summit can be seen the serra da Martiñá to the north and the coto de Novelle to the south, dominating a large part of the Carballiño district and the river valley.
Church of Santa Uxía de Eiras
Monument
A Baroque church whose high altarpiece, dated 1704, is the work of Francisco de Castro Canseco, one of the great altarpiece-makers of the Ourense Baroque; the parish also holds petroglyphs aligned with the summer solstice.
Chu Sup Tsang Buddhist Monastery
Curiosity
In the hamlet of Ventoselo, among chestnuts and oaks, stands the only Buddhist monastery in Galicia; its temple opened on 3 August 2014 and it offers a ten-year programme of study in the Gelug tradition.
Eiras oak
Nature
Oak of some five hundred years growing in the parish of Eiras, in front of the pazo dos Tizón, the most notable survivor of the oak groves that once covered the slopes above the castro of Las. Its bearing stands out in a concello that has lost a third of its population since 2001 and whose average age is around sixty-five.
The church of San Fiz de Navío
Monument
A Romanesque parish church of the 12th and 13th centuries, of rural and austere design, in the parish of Navío. In its surroundings stands the pazo of A Touza, with a monumental chimney and a dovecote of perfectly dressed ashlar.
The first excavations of San Cibrao de Las
Historical milestone
After the visit of Florentino López Cuevillas and Vicente Risco in 1921, the campaigns begun in 1922 brought to light several dwellings, part of the triple wall and the spring-cistern of the great castro settlement.
