What to see and do in Beade

Beade
Village
Beade is one of the smallest and least populated concellos in Galicia, located in the province of Ourense, in the comarca of Ribeiro, between the Faro and Suido mountain ranges and where the valleys of the Miño, Avia, Arnoya and Barbantiño meet. In this land of dry, warm microclimate, with humidity in winter, viticulture dominates the landscape, covering slopes and hollows alongside the neighbouring municipalities of Ribadavia, Castrelo de Miño, Cenlle, Leiro and Carballeda. With around 360 inhabitants over barely 6 km², almost all covered with Ribeiro vineyards, its parish belonged to the Order of St John of Jerusalem, and in the 18th century its commandery was among the largest in the country.
Church of Santa María de Beade
Monument
Built in the 16th century on Romanesque remains still visible in the apse, it belonged to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem; its Renaissance doorway and the four-tiered Baroque tower with a double balcony stand out.
Way of the Cross of Beade
Monument
A set of cruceiros marking out the path between the church of Santa María and the chapel of San Roque and forming a complete calvary, one of the most notable examples of this kind of devotional route in the Ribeiro.
Vineyard terraces of Beade
Nature
The slopes of the smallest municipality in the province of Ourense by area are terraced almost in their entirety into vineyard covered by the Ribeiro designation, a landscape of stepped stone walls above the valley.
The Commandery of Beade
Historical milestone
The parishes of Beade depended on the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem through a commandery which in the 18th century came to be the most important in Galicia, notably enlarging its territory.
