What to see and do in Maside

Maside
Village
Maside is a town in the Ourense comarca of Carballiño, with about 2,800 inhabitants, set on the plain between the serra do Faro and the montes do Testeiro, where thermal waters spring in the parque da Rañoa. There are remains of castros at Piñeiro, Maside and Listanco, and the Romans mined arsenopyrite here, perhaps also gold. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the count of Ribadavia, and the parish of Garabás came to hold the title of vila. It preserves austere 13th-century rural Romanesque work in the churches of Garabás, Trevoedo and Louredo, and above all in that of San Tomé de Maside Vello, from the late 12th century, as well as the bridge of San Fiz, probably built over an earlier Roman one. The clock on its town hall comes from the monastery of Oseira.
Church of San Tomé de Maside Vello
Monument
Romanesque from the late 12th century, the Igrexa de San Tomé de Maside Vello is the oldest of the municipality's nine parishes and a particularly notable example of austere rural Romanesque, a style repeated in the later churches of Garabás, Santa Comba do Trevoedo and Santa María de Louredo, already from the 13th century.
Bridge of San Fiz
Monument
A bridge over the River Barbantiño, probably medieval in origin, in a municipality of barely forty square kilometres that looks out on the Miño to the south-west and on the Serra do Faro to the west.
Maside town hall clock
Curiosity
The clock crowning the town hall came from the monastery of Oseira, in neighbouring San Cristovo de Cea; it still marks the hours in a town that went from 6,339 inhabitants in 1900 to 2,768 in 2025.
Rañoa Park hot springs
Nature
Hot water springs surfacing in the Rañoa park, in a district of gentle relief whose highest points are the Alto do Bolo, at 544 metres, and the Pico Piñeiro, at 443, facing the sierras to the west.
The bridge of San Fiz over the Barbantiño
Monument
An ashlar bridge that crosses the river Barbantiño on the southern edge of the concello, raised probably over an earlier Roman crossing. It served the old route between the Miño valley and the lands of Maside and Cea.
The lagoon of Puzo do Lago
Nature
The Puzo do Lago is a sheet of water located in the parish of O Lago, in the municipality of Maside, declared a natural area of local interest and surrounded by pine, oak and chestnut woods, with frogs, herons and ducks among its fauna. It occupies a former mining operation: the Romans mined arsenopyrite here and, it is said, gold, and the excavation ended up flooded, giving rise to the present-day lagoon. Oral tradition also preserves a legend according to which the Virgin Mary, on her way to Bethlehem and turned away by the stingy local villagers except for an orphan girl who gave her food, cursed the hamlet until it was submerged beneath the waters that today form the lake. Next to the lagoon there is a golf course and a dirt track where horse races and horseball matches are held.
The cruceiro of Maside
Curiosity
A cruceiro whose base represents Adam and Eve beside the tree, an uncommon motif which in Galicia is usually reserved for the pieces of greatest sculptural ambition. It presides over the built-up centre of the villa of Maside.
The hórreo of Listanco
Curiosity
A greatly extended hórreo at the place of Listanco, beside the pazo of Armeses, raised in granite on uprights. It is the most cited ethnographic piece of the concello, in a parish of old cereal-growing tradition.
