What to see and do in Punxín

Punxín
Village
Punxín is the smallest concello in the comarca of Carballiño, in the province of Ourense, with barely 750 inhabitants spread over 17 square kilometres crossed by the Barbantiño river, which flows into the Miño at the southern edge of the municipality. It preserves remains of castrexo settlements on Mount San Trocado and at the castro of San Cibrao de Las, as well as several churches of Romanesque origin remodelled in the Baroque period: the one in Vilela holds 18th-century sculptures of San Pedro and of the Virgin of Sorrows and of the Rosary, and the one in Punxín, from the 17th century, a pre-Romanesque 9th-century sarcophagus attributed to Saint Wintila. The pazo of Punxín dates back to the 12th century.
Santa María de Punxín baptismal font
Curiosity
The parish church, 17th century with Gothic remains, holds a pre-Romanesque font of the 9th century that tradition attributes to San Wintila, the hermit linked to several foundations around the Miño.
Palace of Punxín
Monument
A fortified house whose origins go back to the 12th century, in a municipality of only seventeen square kilometres and six parishes with its seat at A Forxa; beside it, the Pazo do Souto occupies the parish of Freás.
Barbantiño River through Punxín
Nature
It crosses the municipality, which lies at just 145 metres, before delivering its waters to the Miño; the old San Fiz bridge spans it in the neighbouring municipality of Maside, and the district's six parishes sit on its slopes.
The church of San Xoán de Ourantes
Monument
Temple of Romanesque origin of the twelfth century looking out over the Miño valley, remodelled in the Early Modern period, which holds inside a Churrigueresque altarpiece: a usual contrast in the parishes of the Barbantiño, where the Baroque settled over medieval fabrics without erasing them. It is one of the six parish churches that mark out the small concello of Punxín.
The sarcophagus of San Wintila
Curiosity
A pre-Romanesque 9th-century tomb attributed to San Wintila which is kept in the parish church of Punxín, a 17th-century building with Gothic remains. It is one of the oldest early medieval pieces in the whole comarca.
