What to see and do in Valdoviño

Valdoviño
Village
Valdoviño is a coastal municipality of the comarca of Ferrol, in the province of A Coruña, occupying the coastal strip between Campelo beach and the entrance to the ria of Cedeira. Its beaches are very popular among surfers, especially the roughly 3.5-kilometre Frouxeira sands, and Pantín beach, where the Pantín Classic, an international surfing championship, has been held every September since 1988. Next to the latter extends the A Frouxeira lagoon, a wetland protected under the Ramsar convention and a resting place for migratory birds and a breeding site for several species. The municipality is organised into eight parishes: Lago, Loira, Meirás, Pantín, Sequeiro, Valdoviño, Vilaboa and Villarrube. It has 6,818 inhabitants.
Lagoon of a Frouxeira
Nature
Coastal lagoon at the foot of the Frouxeira beach, in the parish of Lago -which it gives its name to-, separated from the sea by a sandbar or dune cordon; it is the most important coastal wetland in the north of the province of A Coruña. Listed in July 1993 on the Ramsar Convention list of wetlands of international importance for its ornithological value as a wintering and breeding area for thousands of birds, mostly migratory, it is also designated a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Importance of the Costa Ártabra. Every year the Xunta de Galicia opens the channel linking the lagoon to the ocean to prevent flooding in nearby homes.
Beach of Pantín
Nature
Sandy beach open to the Atlantic between rocky points and backed by dunes, on the north coast of the municipality (concello); its sandy seabed generates powerful, steady waves that have made it Galicia's best-known surfing beach. Located in the parish of Pantín, in Valdoviño, it hosts a round of the World Surfing Championship every year, the Pantín Classic, with waves that can reach five metres. It is also known as playa do Rodo, after the place where it lies, a place name it shares with the castro do Rodo, situated at one end of the beach.
Pantin Classic
Activity
The Pantín Classic is an international surfing championship held on Pantín beach, in the municipality of Valdoviño, since 1988, always in late summer. It is Spain's oldest surfing event and the fourth oldest in the world, after those of Bells Beach, Virginia Beach and Lacanau. It was born in 1987 on the initiative of a group of enthusiasts who founded the Océano Surf Club, Galicia's first surf club, and chose Pantín because it was an open, almost untouched beach, far from property speculation. Its Atlantic-swell waves made it a fixed date on the international circuit and have turned this coastal village into the concello's biggest sporting event. Since 2008 it has been organised by the Club Praia de Pantín, and in 2016 it was declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Galicia (Festival of Tourist Interest of Galicia).
